Julia Cook

Founder, Reading Specialist

Julia Cook, M.Ed is the founder and lead reading specialist at Rooted Literacy. Julia graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1990.  She graduated from the University of Georgia  with a Master of Education in 1991. Julia began her career teaching 2nd grade for Gwinnett County Schools. She remained in that role for four years before being invited into the inaugural Reading Recovery class for the entire Gwinnett County system. Because of her passion to help young readers develop the basic reading skills needed for success and after having seen the effects of students reaching 2nd grade without the necessary literacy tools in place, Julia specialized in reading instruction with Gwinnett County in both one-on-one and small group settings through Reading Recovery and Title 1 programs. With 3 children of her own, Julia spent time at home raising her children and volunteering in educational and civic roles. After her time at home, Julia continued her career by teaching reading in the Early Intervention Program in Atlanta Public Schools. In 2018, Julia founded Rooted Literacy with the intention of helping children reach their full potential. She is trained in Orton-Gillingham and the Wilson Reading System but uses a variety of research based practices to enhance full literacy education.
